3 laid-back beaches to zip to in 4 hours

Bordi
In Thane district,
145 km/ 4 hours from Mumbai
The aroma of chikoos greets you as you drive down to this almost-forgotten beachfront. While in Bordi, the solitary MTDC resort is your best bet. Once you've checked in, it's easy to believe that you are watching a sunset from your private party. The restaurant (canteen, really) will cook the freshest catch, adding to the seaside vibe. The beach is clean though not ideal for swimming. Still very much a sleepy town that's been home to generations of Parsi families, Bordi's charm and languid pace will slow down the most frenzied city folk. It's a good option while driving down the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway.
Call: 02528 254243 (MTDC Resort, Bordi).

Kashid
In Raigad district,
123km/ 2.5 hours from Mumbai
One of the closest getaways for Mumbaikars, Kashid scores over many of its counterparts for solitude and untouched beauty. Close to the Murud-Janjira sea fort, Kashid's sands make for the ideal weekend retreat if you are short on time. With several resorts dotting the beach, it's a case of plenty. But opt for one of the privately-run resorts. You can drive down or take a ferry from the Gateway of India to reach Murud, from where autos and State Transport buses will drop you to any of the resorts. And while you are here, don't miss eating a Malwani meal at one of the local restaurants.

Mandwa-Kihim
In Raigad district,
136 km/ 3.5 hours from Mumbai
Like neighbouring Kashid, you can either drive down or take the launch from Gateway of India to reach these twin beachfronts. Though unlike Kashid, this stretch can get a bit crowded on weekends. So, book in advance or plan a week-day outing instead. If you are in the mood to explore new terrain, head to Kolaba fort nearby or go butterfly seeing in the woods that line the beachfronts. Mandwa-Kihim isn't a hotspot for swimmers although sunbathers can have a blast, with hammocks and armchairs that dot the MTDC resort here.
