imal Roy’s contribution to cinema is historic.

With his films, he had won over the hearts of cineastes, the nation over. So, when people from varied fields came together to pen their thoughts on the noted film-maker, it was worth sitting up and taking notice.

On Saturday evening, when at a programme presented by The Times of India, at Tollygunge Club, a book on Bimal Roy was released, there were many, who wanted to know more about the noted director. Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi, released the book amidst much fanfare.

Rinki Roy Bhattacharya, Roy’s daughter, who has edited the book, The Man Who Spoke in Pictures, said, “On the subconscious level, I always wanted to do something for my father and then the thought of coming up with this book came to my mind. I wanted a kaleidoscopical view on my father. So, I invited many writers from his era to share their thoughts.”

Lord Meghnad Desai, one of the contributors to the book, recollected his experience, “It is a recording of my thoughts on the great man.”

As the rains lashed the lawns of the club, Sreeradha Banerjee and Saikat Mitra rendered songs from Bimal Roy’s films. Songs like Mera gora ang lai le and Jalte hain jiske liye, truly evoked
nostalgia. The audience surely couldn’t have asked for more.
