Postby aryan on Tue Jul 20, 2010 11:55 am

The Indira Gandhi National Open University (Ignou) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (Mou) with Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International School of Textiles Management (SVPISTM) to offer three new programmes in the domain of textile and apparel management.

These collaborative programmes are MBA in textile and apparel management, certificate programme in apparel marketing and merchandising and certificate programme in apparel production and quality. All the three programmes would be offered in the face to face mode in the SVPISTM campus at Coimbatore.

The programmes have been designed keeping in mind the needs of the textile industry and shall be offered from the academic session that commences this July. Speaking on the occasion (of the Mou signing) the union textiles minister Dayanidhi Maran stated, "Textiles is one of the fastest growing sectors and there is a huge requirement for skilled manpower. This initiative will greatly benefit the people involved in the country's textile industry as a whole. There are also plans to launch a five-year integrated postgraduate programme leading to BTech in this field."

VN Rajasekharan Pillai, vice-chancellor, Ignou, added, "Ignou proposes to leverage the expertise of people working in the textile sector to train students. We shall also set up separate study centres in the North East for new programmes in textile and apparel management."

The new programmes are being coordinated by the Centre for Corporate Training, Education and Consultancy (CCETC), Ignou. The centre is involved in the development of course content and will be responsible for holding the examinations for these programmes. Students shall be given joint degrees by Ignou and SVPISTM. Ignou is also working to introduce new programmes in textiles that shall be offered in the ODL mode.
