Dealing with a moody friend

Postby huma on Mon Jul 19, 2010 11:45 am

You’re friend’s been sulking for a while now and refuses to reveal the reason behind those recent 24x7 mood swings?

Here’s how you handle these ‘moody’ friends without ticking them off further.

Take your friend aside and tell him/her that you’ve noticed that they’ve been quite upset of late and ask them whether there’s anything they’d like to talk about.

Do not demand that they tell you everything. If s/he doesn’t want to talk, respect their wishes.

Pushing him/her to talk when they are not ready to may actually worsen their mood.

If your friend begins to vent out his/her frustrations, listen quietly without interrupting and asking for details. After they have got it off their chest, s/he may in fact, start feeling better and appreciate that you were there for them.

It’s important to give an angry or upset person some time and space alone so that they can blow off some steam.

If it’s an unreasonable boss, unfriendly colleagues or a small tiff with a parent that’s causing your friend stress, try engaging him/her in some fun activities. This will help take the issues off his/her mind, even if it’s just for a while. A drive, or a game of bowling or a nice pampering session at the parlour or even just browsing through the mall could do the trick.
