Digvijay Singh beaten up by cops

Postby aryan on Wed Sep 02, 2009 6:51 am

BHOPAL: AICC general secretary and former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Digvijay Singh got his head split in a clash between Congress workers and

the police in Rajgarh district on Tuesday. Singh was rushed to a hospital where he was given two stitches towards the right temple.

While Congress maintained that Singh was injured in a police lathicharge, the local administration denied committing any excess on man who ruled the state from 1993 to 2003. Madhya Pradesh home minister Jagdish Deora claimed Singh was a victim of Congress indiscipline. "He was hit by a brick hurled by agitating Congressmen," he said.

"That's out of the question. Our workers did not throw any stone," Digvijay told TOI. "It was a peaceful demonstration. All I can say is that the state police has become insensitive to political demonstrations by Congress."

Digvijay was leading a demonstration in Rajgarh against the BJP government's failure to end severe power crisis and tackle the drought situation with more than 10,000 Congress activists on Tuesday. Around 2:30pm, Congress workers marched towards the district collector's office to submit a memorandum.

The police had barricaded the area outside the collectorate. When police prevented Congress workers from moving towards the collectorate, a scuffle occurred between the police and Congress workers.
