Docudrama shows men-women disparity in cricket

Postby huma on Sat Sep 19, 2009 2:57 am

KOLKATA: A 25-minute docudrama titled, Indian Women’s Cricket team Poor Cousins of Million Dollar Babies, featuring the vast disparity existing

between men and women cricketers in the country has been released on Tuesday.

Former Indian women's cricket captain Anjum Chopra and current skipper Jhulan Goswami on Tuesday released the docu-feature made by Sunil Yash Kalra.

Shot in the three of the most influential dressing rooms in the cricketing world - Eden Gardens, MCG and Lord's - the docu-feature captures the high voltage drama, tension and camaraderie of the players over a period of four years.

"The story ends on a high, when girls fulfill their dream of playing at the 'Mecca of Cricket' Lord's Cricket Ground, alongside the men at ICC World Twenty20 early this year," Kalra, who is a women's cricket historian, said.

"This is the story of women’s cricket. Its not just a tale of disparities among men and women in the cricketing arena but a story of the triumph of women’s cricket despite the disparities that prevail," Kalra said.

"The effort is a tribute to these women who have faced hardships to nurture the game of women’s cricket and endured skepticism and ridicule to promote it," she said.

Its a salute to this group of spirited women who have taken the onus of breathing new life into the game and have fun while doing it, she said.

The film throws light on a strong thread of friendship among Anjum, Jhulan, current vice-captain Amita Sharma and the former vice-captain Rumeli Dhar.

"This film is a landmark step in promoting womens cricket at the global arena. I am sure people would enjoy the movie irrespective of which ever part of the world they see in," Anjum said.

"For the first time viewers get a look into our dressing room lives. It is a sincere, well researched effort," Jhulan said.
