Govt unlikely to oppose gay verdict in SC

Postby aryan on Wed Sep 02, 2009 6:17 am

NEW DELHI: The Centre is unlikely to oppose the Delhi high court ruling decriminalising gay sex and a cabinet decision on this is likely to be

taken soon.

Sources said a note prepared on government's likely stand would be put before the union cabinet by the home ministry in the coming days. The note contains the opinions of the three nodal ministries — health, home and law — on the issue of legalising gay sex, they said.

Home minister P Chidambaram, health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and law minister Veerappa Moily have held at least two meetings to finalise the stand on the issue.

The government's stand assumes significance as when the petitions seeking a stay on the HC verdict had come before the Supreme Court, attorney general G E Vahanvati had not pressed for the stay of the judgement. Several petitions have been filed in the apex court which is going to hear them on September 14.
