HOWRAH: Howrah mayor Mamata Jaiswal, a CPM leader, was allegedly molested by a group of Trinamool Congress supporters who pounced on her when she ordered the demolition of a portion of a house that had collapsed on Sunday.
Jaiswal said she was mobbed and heckled by the Trinamool men as soon as she reached the spot with civic engineers for a survey. When she asked the building owner,
Niraj Singh, to demolish the affected portions, he allegedly attacked her with a group of Trinamool supporters.
While the mayor lodged a complaint of molestation at Malipanchghora police station, Singh accused the mayor of slapping him. They both got themselves admitted to hospitals. On Sunday, a portion of the wall of 38 Chotelal Mishra Road collapsed following night rain. Jaiswal arrived with officials, engineers and local CPM councillor Basanti Majumdar in tow.
Missing in action at first, Singh refused to comply with the mayor's instructions when he was found. He accused the CPM-run civic board of victimising him because of political reasons. Soon, Singh was joined by Trinamool workers who mobbed the mayor.
