Kalavaramaye Madilo Movie Review

Postby nahia on Fri Jul 24, 2009 4:14 am

Director Satheesh’s debut film tries to revive that spirit of classical music-based movies of the legendary K Vishwanath. Shreya (Swathi), the

protagonist, aspires to sing under the baton of maestro A R Rahman.

Review this movie

She pursues her passion for music by singing in a hotel but keeps it a secret from her mother (Delhi Rajeshwari).

There, she is attracted to a hotel frequent, Sreenu (Kamal Kamaraju), and keeps talking about him to a friend.
Soon, Shreya discovers that Sreenu too lives in the same building as her. She slowly strikes friendship with him, building up the love element. One day, Shreya is humiliated by an old hotel guest, Rao (Vikram Gokhale) who calls her singing ‘amateur’. On Sreenu’s advice Shreya agrees to train under Rao, who is the best teacher in town, to get her basics right. Initially reluctant, Rao accepts her as his pupil. But during her course, she discovers some shocking truths which form the crux of the story.

Kalavaramaye Madilo, sans all the foreign locales and item numbers, is a roller-coaster ride of emotions. Swathi is a delight to watch in her emotional reel journey. Kamal Kamaraju’s performance is subtle and decent.

Director Satheesh seems promising but could have done better in balancing the contrasting moods in the film. The tale of an aspiring singer has its share of light-hearted and absorbing moments but the clichéd melodrama towards the end could have been avoided. Music composer Sarath Vasudevan doesn’t disappoint. Though A R Rahman has not composed the music, he seems omnipresent.
