Low prices push up laptop sales

Postby huma on Mon Sep 28, 2009 5:07 am

NEW DELHI: Laptop is the new desktop for people now-a-days. In the last four quarters, sale of laptop computers has increased by over 22% while

the desktop ones have remained flat. This growth is mainly because the prices of laptop computers start below Rs 20,000.

This has made the sector very competitive as all the leading five players are vying to capture the bigger market share. For this reason, the smallest laptop player HCL Infosystems, one of India’s premier hardwares, services and ICT system integration companies, unveiled a new strategy to increase its market share in the laptop computer market. At present the company has only 6.4% share in the laptop market, which it is aiming to increase to 20% in the next two years.

Chairman and CEO of HCL Infosystems Ajai Choudhary said that the new strategy has been prepared for young professionals, who use laptops as their personal device, which they not only use to work but also to remain connected with their friends, family and to the outside world. They use it as a tool to remain informed and recreate themselves also.

Based on the findings of a survey by research firm IMRB on today’s consumers, Choudhary said, the new strategy, has been termed as “HCL Mobile Excitement (ME) to establish a more youthful and vibrant image of the brand to ensure a stronger connect with Next Gen consumers. The new strategy is more youth focused and revolves around the growing need amongst consumers for mobility.” Choudhary said.
