KARACHI: Pakistan most successful tennis player Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi, who
recently married, said her marriage has not dissuaded from his goal of becoming the best player ranked doubles tennis.

"My marriage would not affect my goal of becoming the first double international player," said Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi, who was the guest of honor with his wife in Faha the closing ceremony of International Tennis Championship here in Karachi Gymkhana.

Aisam-ul-Haq, who is currently ranked ninth in two international rankings, also played an exhibition match in two here.

Aisam further stated that he would soon team up with someone else. He parted ways with his former teammate Rohan Bopanna of India.

"It was not a big event that we (he and Rohan) separated by a double team. This was a move completely professional. I would soon team up with someone else," he said. Rohan has also spent several days in Pakistan to attend weddings of AISAM.

Aisam and Rohan, who won many tournaments together and called "IndoPak Express", were placed fifth in doubles team rankings.

"I do my best to play in the Olympics next year doubles tennis event," he said.

Meanwhile, he also said he would play for Pakistan Davis Cup tie in Lebanon in February next year.

"I want to play for Pakistan in the Davis Cup. However, it was better if we had received the tie in Pakistan as originally planned. We would have home floor advantage.

"The federation (Pakistan Tennis Federation) should have made efforts to preserve their rights to host the event. The security situation in Pakistan are now stable and foreigners come here. Chinese hockey team plays in Pakistan. In the recent past, the security situation in Lebanon were also not stable, so I think we should have taken a position, "said Aisam.

Aisam further stated that tennis can be promoted in Pakistan if the companies come forward to help the game.

"Companies should come forward and sponsor events in tennis. I think in this way we could promote tennis in the country," he said. (PPI)
