Net-block hits BEd admissions in MDU

Postby huma on Tue Sep 01, 2009 3:27 am

KURUKSHETRA: Online counselling introduced by the Maharishi Dayanand University (MDU), Rohtak, for admissions to BEd regular course this year,

has failed to take off on expected lines. Thousands of students, mostly those who are not net savvy, failed to make it to the admission front during the stipulated time period even after sailing through the first counselling session. They sat at home, waiting for formal admission letters to reach them.

Haryana had assigned the task to MDU, after deciding to do away with entrance exams and holding merit-based admissions instead.
The university has cancelled admissions of 13,292 students, out of the 28,880 with Haryana domicile, who were allotted colleges in the first counselling but failed to report for admission in time. As many as 71,659, including 38,748 from the state, had applied for admissions to 59,088 seats in over 490 colleges where 85% seats were reserved for locals and 15% were for all-India quota.

During the first counselling, 28,880 students from Haryana and 4,603 from all-India category were asked to deposit fees in the concerned colleges by August 19. However, only 15,588 from Haryana and 3,004 others reported in time despite the last date being extended to August 24.

The university cancelled admissions of 13,292 and did not allow them to attend second round of counselling.

Admitting that the move hasn’t gone down well, MDU dean of colleges Dalip Singh said some BEd colleges have already petitioned the Punjab and Haryana High Court to “open up” vacant seats for admissions. The university will submit admission details on the next date of hearing on September 2.

“Admissions of at least 50 local students were cancelled as they failed to apply before the last date,” Shashi, secretary of the BEd college here, told TOI. “The victims approached us for admission against vacant seats two days before the last date, but it’s not in our hands to do so,” she said. Colleges should be allowed to fill vacant seats after the final counselling round, on the pattern of professional colleges, she added.
