New legal order

Postby nahia on Fri Mar 04, 2011 9:56 am

In keeping with the demands of a global and evolving legal world, IE University has launched a Bachelor's programme this February. The programme will give students an opportunity to choose one of four specialisations — corporate, environmental, transnational or EU law.

The programme will have both English and Spanish versions and classes will begin in September at IE's Madrid and Segovia campuses.

"The course," says Soledad Atienza, director of the Bachelor of Laws, IE University, "is designed to respond to the new demands of the sector. The key factor of the programme is its active methodology and content. Students are introduced to professional realities through practical case studies, workshops and role play, while an international approach equips them to practice law in both UK and Spain."

Also, Atienza points out, the law programme will complement many of the existing undergraduate programmes at IE University, besides allowing students to choose between an LLB and a dual degree (BBA+LLB).

As to how the programme's international approach will be beneficial to students, she explains that the legal profession has gone global over the last decade. Lawyers now work with international clients and in separate jurisdictions with different legal systems. Future lawyers need to be trained to handle highly sophisticated transactions for demanding clients. Law is no longer a local playing field.

Atienza further informs that the Spanish and Indian governments are currently working on a bilateral recognition agreement, which will enable Indian students to study in Spain.

In fact, Indian students who have studied the international baccalaureate already have access to the Spanish higher education system.

Also, Indian students will benefit from a programme in both civil and common law. It will prepare them to access the legal profession in both a civil law country (Spain) and a common law country (UK).

As far as scholarships are concerned, IE University has just launched the Latham & Watkins Scholarship for entrepreneurial lawyers, the Clifford Chance Scholarship for diversity and the PWC Scholarship for global lawyers.

The scholarships are aimed towards students pursuing their LLB programme.

The annual cost of the programme is Rs 1,100,000 and the scholarships awarded by IE Foundation amount to around Rs 153 million.
