Postby aryan on Mon Mar 21, 2011 9:50 am

PATIALA: While the Punjab government is yet to announce any plan to help her fight female foeticide and infanticide, the Patiala-based doctor and anti female foeticide activist, Dr Harshindar Kaur has succeeded in persuading Canadian NRIs to help her in fighting the increasing menace in Punjab. On Friday evening the Canandian NRIs announced to support doctor during a function organized to commemorate Women's Day in Malton in Canada.

Harshindar had gone as a special invitee to deliver a presentation on "Son preference in Asians" at a seminar held on March 8, to observe International Women's day, which was attended by over 700 prominent residents of Canada. Dr Kaur's presentation about the decreasing number of girls in various countries of world, apparently moved everyone in the audience when she spoke about "historical injustices'' done to women and female children all over the world.

"It's a wrong impression that only Indians prefer son. The preference for male child in increasing in other countries also and I proved it with full facts. All agreed and have offered help to me to fight against female foeticide and infanticide," said Dr Kaur.

Out of total number of guests around 50% were from various countries like China, Canada, London and US while remaining were Punjabis settled in various states of Canada.

The event was organized by Punjabi Community Health Services (PCHS) to not only celebrate the successes of women, but to highlight the plight of women across the globe. PCHS is an organization, which provides comprehensive services to the entire family and covers a wide variety of areas – addiction, mental health, seniors' issues, parenting, family enhancement and health promotion.

Dr Kaur's book "Baal Mana Vich Jhaat" was also released by Linda Jeffrey, Minister of Natural Resources while MPs Gurbax Singh Malhi, Dr. Kuldeep Singh Kular and Maninder Kaur Swaich, President of PCHS and CEO of PCHS Baldev Mutta promised to help Dr Kaur in her initiative. Six outstanding women, who are contributing immensely towards women issues, were also honoured.
