Pakistan steps in to solve Rahat's detention issue

Postby aryan on Thu Mar 03, 2011 8:08 am

Pakistani Singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, who won the Filmfare Award for the Best Male Playback Singer 2010 for 'Dil To Bachcha Hai Ji' from the movie 'Ishqiya', was detained at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport in New Delhi on Sunday. The revenue intelligence officials detained him and his troupe of 16 members after they were caught allegedly carrying US $1.24 lakh as undeclared foreign currency.

Rahat, who has given a lot of hit songs to Bollywood and has also become a familiar face in the Indian television world, was detained for interrogation by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials. The DRI officials informed that the foreign currency was not declared to the Customs officials after the immigration checks. Rahat and his troupe were on their way back to Lahore via Dubai.

The DRI official also said that the recovered foreign currency included US $10,000 and US $8,600 in demand drafts and some Traveller Cheques. This detention has brought distress back there in Pakistan. The Pakistan Interior Minister Rehman Malik has now stepped in personally to look into the matter over undeclared foreign currency.

Malik gave a call to the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi and spoke to Shahid Malik. The minister demanded details on the detention issue of Rahat, who is nephew to legend Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. He asked Shahid Malik to minutely monitor the matter.
