Publicity is for those who don’t believe in themselves- Jave

Postby huma on Thu Aug 20, 2009 5:21 pm

This playback singer does not need any introduction. His magical melodious voice takes everyone in trance. Nothing succeeds like success, then be it Kajra Re, Jash-E-Bahara or Guzzarish he has proved he is here to stay. Winning IFFA and Radio Mirchi awards for the best playback singing says it all for this ultra-talented singer. Javed Ali in an interview talks about his experience so far and of course, about his latest achievements IFFA and Radio Mirchi award.

You have come a long way in the industry. Which song do you think has been your turning point in the career?

I have been in the industry for a long time now. Kajra Re has been very close my heart, since it was my first hit number. However, due to female-driven nature of the song I did not got my share of appreciation. So, I give credit to the song which I sang for Abbas-Mustan who brought my talent into limelight. The track titled Ek Din Tere Raahon Mein from the duo’s Naqaab.

But you have been keeping a very low-profile despite the numerous successes coming your way. Why is it so?

It was an intentional effort, for I don’t believe in purposeless publicity. I won’t deny- some good wishers of mine did advice me to be bold and very outspoken. But that’s against my nature, as I believe right work at the right time gets its due recognition. Publicity gimmicks work for people who don’t believe in themselves, with due respect to the people who practice them (smiles).

You were recently awarded by IFFA and Radio Mirchi. How does it feel to be recognized after a lot of struggle?

I feel more than honoured to be recognized by none other than IFFA. Honestly, I was not expecting the award, considering the contenders in the same nominations. As soon as my name was taken, I was taken by surprise and have no idea about what happened after that, because everything seemed gloomy to me. You feel a great sense of confidence in yourself, when considering the fact you have been rejected in the initial years of your career. I personally feel that such honours give you a reason to work more hard, and deliver better product every time.

You have lent your voice to songs featured on almost all the stars of Bollywood that turned out to be chartbusters. For which actor do you feel your voice fits in the bill perfectly?

Looking at the chartbusters be Guzaarish (Ghajini), Jash-E-Bahara (Jodhaa Akbar) or Nagada Nagada (Jab We Met), I feel all these songs have inimitability in them. However, if I had to choose I would say Hrithik Roshan for Jash-E-Bahara (Jodhaa Akbar).

Every artist has a comfort zone where they like to remain, and your genre seems to be romantic numbers. Also, considering the popularity of contemporary and out of the box music, will you ever leave this zone and experiment with other genres?

Of course, I welcome experiment and people who can take risk. See, to create something out-of-the-box needs a lot of compatibility among the people who have the aim of churning out something like that. In my case, things work out if me and the other person shares the same vision and as I said earlier, they have to be ready to take risk.

Tell us about your projects in the pipeline?

Loads of work is coming up, like last week I recorded a song for Ashutosh Gowariker’s What's your Rashi and Mani Ratnam’s Raavan. I have also signed Yash Raj and Indra Kumar’s next. I am also working with Pritam, Daboo Malik.
