Yes. I have been busy with my career and we have never spoken about this. Sania’s grandmother is my aunt. When I came down to Mumbai to make my mark as a singer, I had stayed with Sania’s grandmother. Sania’s grandfather used to work at Central Railways then. Sania’s father, Imran, was in high school then.

You also know the Siddiquis...
I don’t have any blood relations with the Siddiquis. The old-timers know each other and when the news broke out, I asked my cousins based in Hyderabad about what’s happening. When I saw the girl’s mother on television, I could identify her as Farisa. I know her but I don’t know the father very well. But I’ve never seen this girl (Ayesha). When I asked my cousins about this girl, they said that she never meets anybody.

There are speculations that Sania might have already got married to Shoaib...
I can vouch for the fact that Sania and Shoaib haven’t got married yet.

What was your first reaction when you heard about Sania and Shoaib alliance?
I didn’t know Sania was in love with Shoaib till I got a mail from Imran mentioning about the wedding. I don’t know Shoaib personally, but am happy that Sania was getting married, specially after a broken engagement.

There are speculations over why Sania is rushing into marriage soon after her engagement broke...
It’s Sania’s personal matter. I know Sohrab Mirza’s family too. His grandmother was my like mother and I literally grew up in that house. Sohrab’s father, Adil, is like my younger brother. I don’t want to speculate.

Now that Shoaib has signed the divorce papers, are you going to Hyderabad today?
I was supposed to go to Hyderabad today, but have cancelled my tickets now because there was so much mess. Five or six days ago, Sania had called me up and asked: ‘Talat uncle, will you sing at my mehendi?’ Of course, I had agreed. If all goes well, I’ll be singing at her mehendi because I am her uncle. I will not be there because I am a ghazal singer. I’m so relieved now. Shoaib has signed the divorce papers. I can’t comment on behalf of Shoaib about why he signed it so late. Nobody wanted so much muck all around. I’m happy for Sania. I know she works hard on her tennis. She might have suffered injuries but she is still playing. Sania is a strong girl. But the kind of things happening around her life can affect anybody. Sania has inspired so many women in India. It wasn’t fair that she should have been attacked this way. I want her to be happy with the man whom she has chosen as her life partner. I want Sania to concentrate on her game and win lots of laurels for India.
