Sri Lanka finish Day 2 at 275/3 after Dilshan's ton

Postby aryan on Tue Nov 17, 2009 3:30 pm

Day 2 of the Ahmedabad Test was another high-scoring one. Sri Lanka cruised to 275-3 replying to India's 426 all out on Tuesday. Tillakaratne Dilshan blasted India's bite-less bowling for his 10th Test hundred, and just seven wickets fell on either side all day. Sri Lanka still trail India by 151 runs. But it's worth wondering at this point if India have the bowling strength to force a win on this lifeless Motera wicket.

India vs Sri Lanka: Scores, Day 2
Latest: India 426. Sri Lanka 275/3 at stumps.
Day 1 Report | Pics
Zaheer Khan's delicious trickery late in the day cut Dilshan's innings short. The left-arm pacer, making his return to international cricket, bounced out Dilshan and Kumar Sangakkara in successive overs after tea. But there was precious little from Ishant Sharma, Harbhajan Singh and Amit Mishra. Mahela Jayawardene and Thilan Samaraweera put on a rock-steady 80 and there may be plenty more to come from the duo tomorrow.

Earlier, Rahul Dravid failed to add to his overnight score of 177, becoming Chanaka Welegedera's fourth victim. Zaheer (12) hung around with Harbhajan (22) for a little while, before Muttiah Muralitharan wrapped the innings up with a double break. Both sides would have little to complain about. India were 32-4 at one stage but recovered to post 385-6 on Day 1, and Sri Lanka would be pleased the Indian tail didn't wag.

Dilshan has been in sublime form all year and he cashed in on the flat wicket. An opening stand of 74 with Tharanga Paranavitana set the tone for the innings. The Lankans scored at over four an over while Dilshan was in.

But for MS Dhoni's brilliance - he flew to his left to catch an edge off Paranavitana's bat - India's fielding was embarrassing at times. Several misfields resulted in easy boundaries for the Lankans. Sri Lanka took tea at a commanding 155-1 in just 34 overs.

Dilshan's hundred was brought up a while into the evening session. He crashed Ishant past point for his 11th four, raising the landmark in just 120 balls.

Zaheer then returned to get him first ball of a new spell. Dilshan mistimed a hook that ballooned to Dravid running in from gully. It ended a 115-run partnership. Next over, Sangakkara hooked another bouncer to Sachin Tendulkar at long leg.

India had played an extra batsman in Yuvraj Singh and it ultimately helped them achieve a remarkable recovery after a disastrous start. But they are a bowler short. Should Sri Lanka run away with a big lead on Wednesday, India can forget about winning this Test.
