Vidya Balan says she's volatile in relationships, and admits that her equation with Pradeep Sarkar has been the most volatile – what she describes as a love-hate relationship
Everyone's talking about ego tussles between you and Rani, while both of you are denying it...
Because it's unbelievable for people that two actresses can get along. Firstly, I don't think boys believe that girls get along. And, we are not claiming to be friends. There was a good working equation between us. I've had a great amount of respect for her and she's my favourite among my immediate seniors. That said, we had completely different characters and there was no scope for any competition. No scope of 'yeh meri line usne toh nahin le lee', or 'is she looking better' or 'who gets the hero in the end'. Our only focus was the scene at hand. Also, it would be presumptuous of me to compete with her, so, I didn't. She's been there longer than I have and she's very accomplished.
In " No One Killed Jessica", you fearlessly fight for justice. But are you fearless in life?
Often, and I've realised it after doing the film, that it's not so much about fear for oneself. But when it comes to your loved ones, you become weak. I think I'm fearless where my life, my career and my decisions are concerned, but I don't know how fearless I can be when it comes to my loved ones. For instance, if I think a certain decision I take will impact them, I'm hoping I'll have the courage to stand up for what is right.
You're the emotional types, right?
Can't you tell? My loved ones – my parents, my sister and my brother-in-law – are my strength and weakness. In general, I like connecting with people. And if I'm fond of them, I can give a lot of concessions. But I'm emotional and it could go either way – I think sometimes I'm so intense in my relationships that if something goes wrong, it can go horribly wrong. And I'm not the kinds to have a fight, I just withdraw. When you invest that much, in a friend, man, director, or anyone, you react also like that.
Are you volatile in relationships?
Yes. As much as I'd like to believe that I'm very calm, I think the truth is that I'm quite volatile.
So, in a confrontation, one should steer clear of vases?
(Laughs) Volatile as in, I'm not confrontational, like i will not indulge in raving and ranting, but I shut down, which is worse.
Have you tested this on someone?
Actually, on quite a few people. With dada, that is Pradeep Sarkar, I've had the most volatile equation – it's love-hate. Beyond my family, he's one of those with whom I've shared such a relationship and it continues to date. That's what I mean. It's so intense that either we are connecting constantly or not connecting at all.
Is it intense with Rani?
No, no, it's a nice, happy-go-lucky thing. It's intense when you get emotionally attached. In equations with a co-star, there's a nice chemistry, but that's it. We've gotten used to each other after giving so many interviews together.
