Wardrobe Must-haves for the Career Woman

Do you struggle to pick out an outfit every morning before you dash off to work? Are you always wondering whether to wear a blazer or kurta?

Well, we got you some wardrobe staples that will help you ensure you are dressed right Monday to Friday. Take a look.

1) Western Express:

Pull it off: Every day
Image
Black trousers/skirt: Imagine a casual day without denims? That's akin to a work wardrobe without a pair of impeccably fitted black formal pants or A-line skirts — whatever your style is. They're comfy, stylish, great camouflagers of extra fat/cellulite and go with just about any formal shirt or blouse.

Feminine blouse: Think Bree in Desperate Housewives. Crisp, businesslike shirts may be the norm, but it feels great to pull off feminine blouses over formal trousers/skirts every now and then.

Fitted blazer: This one's for all those important meetings where what you say/don't say is going to be as important of how "serious" you look while saying it. Great for those presentations that need you to take centre stage. And when you're done with the rendezvous, shrug off that blazer to reveal your feminine blouse — yes, from above — at the post-party.

2) The desi look:

Pull it off: Every day

Cotton salwar-kameez/churidar-kurtas: Perfect for women who don't feel completely at ease in Western apparel. A crisp, crease-free "desi suit" will make you seem equally businesslike. After all, it's not so much about what you wear as how well you carry it off.

Scratched sari: The epitome of the dignified look, a crisp cotton sari with ikat/batik/bandhani work or embroidery will make you seem mature and "in-charge". Three-fourth or full sleeve blouses complete the look, if the weather permits. Especially great if you're above 40 or are receiving international clients.

3) The Indo-Western look:

Pull it off: On casual work days/if you're in a profession — media, fashion, etc. — where the concept of a fixed work wardrobe doesn't exist.

Embroidered Nehru jacket: Wear it over a white shirt/blouse and dark jeans or trousers.

Dupattas/scarves: Jazz up a simple outfit with accessories such as dupattas, scarves or even stylish shawls to beat the air-conditioner.
