Why Are College Textbooks So Expensive?

Postby Maddy1 on Sat Sep 03, 2011 8:27 am

We can buy our books from the college book store which is by Barnes and Noble. A calculus book is over $200 and they go by the listed price. You can buy that same book from the regular Barnes and Noble store for about $175 and they are probably about the same price on Chegg and Amazon. Why are they so expensive from the school? Where is this money going to since you can buy them cheaper anywhere else? Or does it have something to do with going by the listed price?

From my understanding, my college makes most of it's money through the book store, especially when buying back our books at the end of the semester because of course we get ripped off. They use the money for renovation or such.

In my opinion there are many reason of college books are expensive like use better paper quality, government take more Tex in this book, give royalty of author and transportation so college books are expensive.

I save A LOT of money by buying them online through ebay or amazon marketplace. The bookstores at the schools rip you off!
But the best part is that you can still sell them back to your school bookstore at the end of the semester.

Textbooks are expensive because it's a limited audience. Even the people who write them don't make much off of them - just printing a small number can be expensive. If you have to buy a new edition, it's because the publisher changed it and you can't get the old one anymore - that's not your professor's fault, they have no control over that.

The reason which i think is these textbooks are mainly of foreign writers and its audience is limited. And the people who generally buys it,they really want these books to study and prepare for examinations.so,they don't care about prices. And that is why publishers charge such high rates.z score chart
